 History of Kirkland Kiwanis

Kirkland Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Club of Kirkland was organized October 29, 1947, sponsored by the University Club of Seattle.

We meet each Wednesday of the year at noon at the Crab Cracker, 452 Central Way, Kirkland, WA 98033. Our meetings end at 1:15 PM.

In the 65 years of our existence, we have met in downtown Kirkland. We started out at the Pastime Cafe (later known as The Surf). We met there for approximately 20 years. We moved across the parking lot to The Flame Steak House, where we stayed for another 20 years. We then moved next door to The Kirkland Roaster for 15 years. We began a new chapter in the history of Kirkland Kiwanis in September 2003 and now meet at the Crab Cracker.

Our board meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at noon at the Kirkland Teen Center

We have over 100 members in our club, including a wide variety of occupations, community service commitments and interests. Our weekly meetings include interesting programs that cover a wide range of subjects.

Our club is involved in over 30 areas of service in Community Service, Youth Services, Sponsored Youth (Key Club at Lake Washington High School as well as the International School and Builders Club at Kirkland Junior High), Human and Spiritual Values, and Young Children Priority One (pre-natal to age 6).

We raise funds to provide service to our community by selling BBQ beef sandwiches at Kirkland Summerfest, Christmas trees on Kirkland Way and gourmet nuts for the holidays. We participate by walking for the March of Dimes, dragon boat racing for the Boyer Clinic, and we golf to raise money for the Young Life projects.

There are eleven Kiwanis clubs on the Eastside of Lake Washington. Together they form Division 28 and are lead by 2004-2005 Lt. Governor Jackie Roberts. The Division is a part of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International. The Pacific Northwest District covers the geographical area from Weed, California to Nome, Alaska. Membership in the District is approximately 12,000 Kiwanians.

Kiwanis is a worldwide voluntary service organization.

Our motto is "We Serve the Children of the World."
