Bill Ward
Hi... I'm Bill Ward.

I was born and raised in Washington DC. In 1976 I moved to Kirkland with my wife and two daughters.

My third Daughter was born at Evergreen Hospital, which happens to be where my wife works.  I worked for Boeing for over 34 years as a main frame Programmer (IBM big boxes).

I just recently retired from Boeing.  I started in the IT Business back in Washington DC in 1969. I served in many capacities in my church over the years, including being a leader, both locally and nationally in the YMCA Parent child program.

I joined the Kiwanis club to give back to the community in which I live because it has provided so many pleasant moments in my life. I also feel that we need to help the youth of our society to understand what it means to be a member of the community not just a resident in the community.

Thank you so much for letting me tell you a little bit about me. I look forward to meeting you so come by at a meeting and let me know a little about you.

Bonni Sundberg
Hi...  I'm Bonni Sundberg.

I was born and raised in Butte, MT and I moved to Seattle in 1982 where I met my husband, Walter Jaccard. We married 5 years later and I became an “instant mom” to Walter’s two children, Kaitlin and Erik. They were 3 and 5 when they came into my life. Both are grown and married and doing very well. They are definitely “MY kids”, too!

Prior to moving to Seattle, I worked for Montana Power as an executive assistant and did a lot of video work including training tapes and TV commercials. I have had a long career in music and theater, traveling the “road circuit” in the late ‘70s. I gave up music for many years after coming to Seattle, focusing on family, work and life. I worked as an administrative assistant for Thousand Trails and Horizon Air. I changed careers in 1992, moving into the healing arts which lead me to working with animals. I did Equine Massage for 7 years and in that same time period taught classes at the Humane Society, helping people learn to work on their own cats and dogs. I also taught 4H kids to work on their horses when injured or just to help with movement. From there, I went to school for “people massage”, and I have been working on “humans” for 15 years. I currently have a part-time massage practice where I work on women only.

About 6 years ago I decided to give music another try and have been having a ball ever since. I sing in an oldies rock and roll band called The Verge. We call ourselves a “party band” and do a pretty good job of keeping things hopping at our gigs.

For the past year or so, I have been feeling a need to get involved with an organization that works with community and especially with the Kirkland community. I have wanted to meet new people, have a sense of community and give back. I am so grateful for all I have and want to be able to share. Things just lined up for me to become involved with Kiwanis and it is exactly what I have been looking for. I have great admiration for all Kiwanis does in the community and the plans the club has for the future. I look forward to being part of the team.

Cherri Hoyden
Hi, I am Cherri Hoyden and pleased to be a new member of Kiwanis. I look forward to meeting each of you.

A little about myself.  I was raised in CA and moved to WA in 1991 to attend the University of WA.  I have since met my husband Ed and we have been married for almost 20 years now.  We have 4 children between the two of us and eleven grandchildren.

By profession I am an audiologist and try to help improve people lives through better hearing.  I also work with the Kirkland Senior Council and am excited to work with the Kiwanis.  I don’t think I have ever seen a more fun group that this Kiwanis group.  I look forward to the positive and lively weekly meetings

Dale Sahr
Hi, I’m Dale Sahr.

I was born and raised in San Jose, California, where I got my B.S. in Business (Marketing) from San Jose State University after spending 2 years in Provo, UT at BYU.

I moved to Washington in the summer of 1986 after visiting for a few beautiful days and being tricked into believing that it was always going to be like that (just kidding).  Except for 2 years spent in Spokane for a job I’ve lived on the Eastside ever since without looking back.

1993 was a big year for me.  I met and started dating my wife, Nancy, and also started working for fellow Kiwanian Len McAdams at almost the same time.  I am looking forward to being a member of the Kirkland Kiwanis club and getting to know all of you.

Dave Asher
Hi, I’m Dave Asher

After retiring from the Army, my bride and I moved to
Kirkland nearly 20 years ago. I had spent over 20 years
facing exciting challenges from the ground as an Infantry
officer and at tree-top level as commander of attack
helicopter organizations.

Soon after arriving in the northwest, I went to work at
UW’s Office of Planning and Budgeting. I moved money
around for nearly 20 years, retiring as the Chief
Financial Officer of UW’s Educational Outreach.

I relished getting involved in my new community since
Army life was, at most, 3-years in one location. I
joined and became chair of the North Rose Hill
Neighborhood Association and later co-chair of the
Kirkland Alliance of Neighborhoods. I have also been
involved in my church and in the northwest Methodist
Conference.

My neighborhood experience fighting City Hall led me to
believe I could do more good from the inside. The voters
agreed and have allowed me to serve on the City Council
for 12 years.

I am excited to join Kiwanis to broaden my horizons with
others that are concerned about building strong
communities and the next generation of our country and
the world.

Don Jury
Hi... I'm Don Jury.

Thanks for welcoming me into the Kiwanis Club. I was born and bred of good stock in Nebraska, home of the Cornhuskers!  I grew up in Beatrice, a town of 12,410, (the population sign outside of the town hasn’t change in 50 years). I moved to Kansas City after high school for ten years where I met my wife.  I graduated from the University of Missouri of Kansas City with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

My wife and I moved to Kirkland in1983, and soon after that I found myself working for Bill Petter as a sales representative selling Volvos. I found this experience quite rewarding as Bill and Terry were very supportive. They gave me the latitude to do things my way, which worked well for both of us since I became their top sales person nearly every month.

When Bill sold the dealership,  I choose to leave the car business since the new owner wanted to go from doing business straight up and honest, to turning the dealership into the hard core selling , putting profits above employees and customer service.  I decided to find a new career, and a friend of mine suggest real estate appraising given that I had a background in real estate.  I'd had a broker’s license since 1980.

After cutting my teeth for several years with different appraisal firms, I started my own real estate appraisal firm in 1995.  The name of my firm is JBI Real Estate Services. My firm conducts appraisals for mortgage lending, estate planning and settlement, marriage divorces, real estate feasibility, and real estate litigation.  I have been doing this for the past 20 years serving King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties.

In addition to the Kiwanis, I am an active member to the Knights of Columbus at Holy Family Catholic Church. The K of C does many fund raisers and charitable events also serving the Kirkland community but, primarily the parish. I have joined the Kiwanis to expand my involvement in the greater Kirkland community.

I have been married to my wife Kathy for 34 years and together we have raised four wonderful children Ben 32, Julie, 30, Bethany 25, and Thomas 23 that have brought us much happiness. Julie has also blessed us with three wonderful grandchildren, James, (the Cheese) 7, Jacob, (Moose) 5, and Jaylen, (My baby girl) 2.

Our hobbies are camping, fishing, boating, hunting, hiking, and celebrating life with our friends.

Don Schmitz
Hi... I'm Don Schmitz.

I’m a native Washingtonian, born in Seattle, raised in SeaTac and now live in Kirkland.  I graduated from Glacier High School in the Highline School District in 1964.

After two years at Highline Community College, I went to work in the post office delivering mail.  I saw an ad for the King County Sheriff’s Reserves and decided to join.  After a year of working a reserve car in Burien weekend evenings for free, I decided that getting paid was better so I took the test and joined the King County Sheriff’s Department in 1969.

I worked in the KC Jail and Patrol duty.  I met my wife Patty and we settled in Kirkland.  We have six children, all girls. Our children went through Holy Family and Lake Washington High School.  I now have five grandchildren.

When the kids were young, I wanted something closer to home so I transferred into Special Operations Marine Unit.   The Marine unit consisted of 8 officers who were also SCUBA Divers.  We patrolled Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish and were called upon to do the recoveries of people, cars, and other items from the waters of King County including the recovering victims of the Green River Killer.

We were called upon to do just about everything, including Search and Rescue, Flood Patrol, and to assist east of the mountains to patrol the forest fires in Leavenworth and Chelan.  After 30 years in the Marine Unit I retired March 2004.

I now enjoy retirement by doing projects for my church and neighbors, and volunteering in the neighborhood.  I’m a member of the Knights of Columbus.

I also have a 1933 Plymouth rumble seat coupe I’m working on.  Many days you can find me in the garage with the MIG welder going and the Beach Boys belting out Little Deuce Coupe on the radio.

Gina Koehl
Hi... I'm Gina Koehl.

My love of finance has kept me in the banking industry since 1977, and I have been focusing on the mortgage industry specifically for the past 19 years. I work as a Senior Mortgage Banker at Directors Mortgage Inc. in Kirkland, Wash., specializing in all types of home loans and working with clients ranging from first-time to well-established home buyers. I have been a member of the Presidents Club for the past 17 years and a top producer in the mortgage industry.

My primary business goals include providing the highest level of customer service, supplying truly personalized loans and making each loan transaction as simple for my clients as possible. I have set high standards to give clients the best possible home buying experience - one that instills trust, confidence and peace of mind. I strive to build strong relationships with each client, so that I can recommend a loan that caters to each client's individual wants and needs.

John Kettel
Hi... I'm John Kettel.

I am excited and very grateful to be a member of Kiwanis, I look forward to more involvement and getting to know each of you.

I was born and have lived my entire life in Washington, with the exception of military time and three years in Oregon.  After graduation from the University of Washington, we lived and raised our family in the Bothell area.  My son lives in the Seattle area, my daughter in Alaska.  My full time working career ended last year, allowing for additional volunteer activities, involvement in our church, and will be working part time.

I enjoy outdoor activities, including walking and golf, and I like to read and learn.
I was given an additional wonderful blessing when Molly came into my life. We have been married for four years and live in the Kirkland area.  Molly has three sons;  two live in the area, one in Chicago. It has been a wonderful experience joining our families together.  Molly and I enjoy our time together, our time with family and friends, and spending as much time as possible with our two wonderful grandchildren.

Kathy Cannon
Hi... I'm Kathy Cannon.

I have always been inspired by those that do for others.  I was delighted when Redith Ross approached me about becoming a Kiwanis member.  Since then I feel blessed to not only be involved in a service organization such as Kiwanis, but also feel privileged to have met so many wonderful people who have influenced my life in such a positive way.  Since becoming a member I have had the opportunity to participate in a number of different functions and events all of which have been fulfilling and inspiring to my life.  My hope is to be able to offer that same level of inspiration and hope to those we are assisting through our programs and within our community and for all to know that Kiwanis of Kirkland cares.

I have lived in the Puget Sound area since we moved here from California at 4 years of age. I am an identical twin which makes my outlook on life somewhat different as I tend to see things from a "we" perspective rather than as an individual.  I am very close to my twin as well as my two other sisters.  I have been blessed with a wonderful daughter, Jessica, who holds the key to my heart.

I have worked in the legal field for 32 years and currently work as a litigation paralegal for a medium sized firm in Kirkland, Washington.

I have many hobbies and interests some of which include beekeeping, gardening, my dogs, weightlifting, and running.  My passion is music and singing which brings me great joy.

Kim Henwood
Hi... I'm Kim Henwood.

I am a Washington native (and LWHS alum).  I was born in Seattle, and moved to Kirkland when I was four.  I still reside in the house where I grew up over the past 40+ years.

I've been happily married to Jay Henwood for over 28 years and we are the proud parents of two adult children; Jamie and Kellie Henwood.

My volunteer experience is comprised of various positions with PTA (Kirkland Jr. High, and Lake Washington High School), as well as Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association, and Kirkland Little League. I love the Kirkland community and am always looking for ways to protect the small-town feel of Kirkland... along with its sense of community, safety and well-being... for the future generations.

I am currently working as the Administrative Coordinator and Executive Assistant for Northwest Choirs (Vocalpoint! Seattle and Northwest Boychoir), a Seattle non-profit music organization made up of nine choirs all ranging from ages 6-18 years of age. In many ways I don't really consider this a job since I love being  around the beautiful voices of over 200 talented young choristers.

In previous years I've worked in the mortgage industry, accounting, and the publishing industry. I also assist Jay with bookkeeping and other various tasks for Jay's Kirkland Autocare.

Nancy Gordon
Hi... I'm Nancy Gordon.

I was born and raised in a little town in upstate New York, on the Vermont boarder, called Granville, NY. Between my 2nd grade and half way through the 9th grade, I lived in a Berg called Hartford, NY. The rest of the time, I lived in Granville, NY. There was no college for me as my father didn't believe in women going on to further their education as "they wouldn't be using it anyway." His words, not mine. I met my husband through his step-mother in 1971. We were married on October 14, 1972, and our oldest of 2 boys was born on our first wedding anniversary, 1973. Our second son was born in April of 1976.

Since then I have attended many, many colleges and universities as a Continuing Education Student taking one course at a time, because that was all we could afford.
I have a little knowledge in quite a few things; however, I have also had hands on experience in helping to remodel homes with my husband, Robert (Bob).

When the boys got a little older, I decided that the High School Diploma that I received when I graduated from Granville High, wasn’t going to cut it anymore as most all employers wanted a college degree of some sort. So, even though I majored in Secretarial courses in high school, I took a Course through Harcourt Learning Direct, an on-line college located in Scranton, PA. I received my Diploma from them in 1995 for Professional Secretary. Of course, now secretaries are known as Administrative Assistants.

I have taken additional courses on other subjects since then in different subjects.

I have been associated with several different organizations throughout my life. I was the secretary for the VFW in Westerly, RI in 1987-88, planning parades, and fund raisers. When the boys were in school, I was the PTO president for their school in 1984-85. Later I served on our churches Pastoral Council in 1998-99. Then in 2009-2010, I served on the Finance Committee for the same church. I have been associated with church choirs for over 20 years now singing as an Alto to start with, now singing as a Soprano.

I have also ventured into several different businesses on my own, I have had a photography business, had a bookkeeping business, sold a line of clothing called Weekenders, sold Tupperware, Avon, my own line of jewelry, and have had a typing business.

I have also worked in many venues as a secretary over the past years, Insurance, manufacturing, construction to name a few.

As stated before, I was married in 1972 to my wonderful husband, Bob, who has been very supportive in every venture I have undertaken.

We have two upstanding boys who are an asset to the communities that they live in. One, our oldest, works from home for Seagate, and our youngest is a Tech Sergeant in the Air Force, waiting to put on his stripe for Master Sergeant.
We have five (5) grandchildren that are absolutely the best. We have two step-granddaughters, 21 and 20, both going to college, majoring in the medical field, and three grandsons still in elementary school. Christian, the oldest is 10, and in the 5th grade, Marcus, is next and just turned 8. He is in the 2nd grade. That leaves little Mikee, he is four and goes to Pre-Kindergarten. All five of our grandchildren are extremely smart. Can you tell that I am proud of them?

I have literally lived from one side of this great country to the other side. I grew up in upstate New York, moved to Connecticut, then Rhode Island, then southern California and now here in Washington. I have made many, many friends along the way. Some went to the way side, but a few good friends have stayed.

Pam Dahl
Hi... I'm Pam Dahl.

In 1989 I realized that my husband was not attending his North Central Kiwanis meetings regularly.  I decided to attend a meeting and ended up being the first female member and the club president twice.  For several years... fifteen... I put on their auction to provide funds for the camp they sponsored.  They continue to sponsor this free camp for disabled children at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island.  For many years, I was one of three cooks who prepared meals from scratch for 100 kids from age 6 to 17. During this time, I worked for a durable medical company and saw many of my clientele at camp and enjoyed seeing them have fun with other campers and counselors while I cooked in the kitchen, cleaned and enjoyed friendships from the members of this group.

After working in the durable medical equipment industry for thirty years, I have worked as a sales and marketing director for two assisted living communities in Redmond, worked as the director of respiratory services for another DME, and worked as a pharmaceutical rep covering six states for five years.  In 2011, I started working with Graham & Graham as an Eldercare Consultant.  Graham & Graham is a free placement service, helping seniors and families to understand Long Term Care.  I have resigned from this position.  I have been asked to return to my previous position as a pharmacy rep with Digestive Care, Inc.  On May 17, 2012, DCI was granted their FDA approval on their NDA; as of July 9th I will be returning to my territory to call on my accounts.

Ross Dessert
Hi... I'm Ross Dessert.

I retired in November, 2007 after a 30 year career with The Boeing Company.  I  joined Boeing in 1978 after having previously served as a U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer. I currently co-own a management consulting firm that works with public school districts across the state of Washington.

I am a 1971 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a BS degree in Naval Science, and earned a Masters Degree in Management in 1989 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

My wife Terry and I have resided in Kirkland, Washington since 1978 (with the exception of 8 years in Huntsville Alabama).  We have four children, four grandchildren and a golden retriever.

Susan Lemaire
Hi … I’m Susan Lemaire.

I was born in the small, rural town of Lisbon, Connecticut.  Both my parents were High School Math teachers and I am one of 4 daughters.  My Mom still lives in the house I grew up in, and my Dad passed away in November 2010 from Pancreas/Liver cancer.  I miss him every day.

I moved to Bellevue in June 2004 (with my now ex-husband for his job at Microsoft), and I joined the Coldwell Banker Bain/Bellevue office where I worked as a Real Estate Agent for 5 years before joining the Windermere/Yarrow Bay office in December 2009.  Before relocating to the Seattle Area in June 2004, I was a licensed real estate agent in the Bay Area of Northern California where I still hold an Active real estate license.

Being in real estate can be rewarding and frustrating – depending on the day.  There are two things that I love and hate about this job – it’s different every day.  That can be exciting and also unpredictable, but after 13 years I can’t think of anything I would rather do for a career.  I love what I do, I’m good at it.   I’m passionate about real estate, and I’m devoted to service with an emphasis on accountability, reliability, and enthusiasm.  My mission statement is:   “Helping individuals and families find the home of their dreams, and seeing them through a smooth transaction, is one of the greatest rewards of my career.  I pride myself on providing dependable, consistent and personable service.”

I live in Kirkland with my two cats – 2 yr. old “Gracie”, and 6 month old “Buckley”.   In my spare time I enjoy running.  I ran my first Full Marathon in 2002; and have completed 8 Half Marathon's since then.   I also enjoy golf, wine, playing poker (Texas Hold'em) and reading mystery novels.

I look forward to meeting all my fellow Kiwanian’s, and contributing to the group and giving back to the community.

Susanne Canin
Hi... I'm Susanne Canin.

I grew up in Chicago and attended the University of Illinois. I am the youngest of four children and am often reminded of that. I met my husband, Jeff Canin, in San Francisco and lived there for about 10 years. While I was in San Francisco, I worked for Merck as a pharmaceutical representative and completed an MBA at Golden Gate University. Jeff and I then moved to Kirkland in 1995 and started a family. We have two children ages 10 and 14 who currently go to school at Peter Kirk and Lake Washington High School.

My volunteer experience is comprised of various positions with PTA-Peter Kirk and Kirkland Junior High as well as Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association. I enjoy working with children to help them achieve academic success and fun.

I worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative in San Francisco and Seattle for 20 years. Three years ago, I made a career change. I am currently working as a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Kirkland where my focus is on helping retirees plan for adequate retirement income, and insurance.

I was born and raised in Sunny California.  I met my husband, Anthony during my high school years and we married right after graduation.  We’ve been married for 28 years. My husband Anthony is a mechanic by trade but is now a professional photographer.  He is amazing in all the skills he possesses.  I am never surprised when he tells me “I can do that”.  From fixing our cars, both inside and out, welding, electrical, carpet laying.  All our home projects have been complements of him. Thank you dear.

We have two beautiful girls.  Our daughter Jennifer is 27 and now lives in Bellingham.  She is our classical /opera singer.  She went through many lessons and competitions and was amazing.  At age 8 she performed in La Boheme at the Seattle Opera House.  Unfortunately since the job market for that is harder than most and tuition more expensive, she changed her degree to a general studies degree.  She still has music in her heart and is in the Whatcom Choir.

Our younger daughter is 23 and had given us a different type of adventure.  She was born with disabilities and we nearly lost her many times.  While blind and in a wheelchair, no one has more zest for life than she does.  She has previously competed in the Special Olympics, works at Denny’s in Totem Lake, has therapeutic horse-riding lessons every Saturday morning at 8:30 and competes in the annual horseshow in June, and loves summer camp.  Whenever I need a pick me up, I just need to look at her happy smile and listen to her cheerful giggle.

With my hands full raising this amazing family and working full time, I was able to take classes one at a time.  It was a very slow process but with perseverance and constant encouragement from my family and supervisors, I completed my AA degree in Accounting after 8 years.  I didn’t realize how closely my oldest daughter was watching me through this journey until I graduated.  She told me how proud she was of me and how much she wants to be like her mom.  That in itself was worth it all!

I’ve had 4 jobs in my life from fast food as a starting job in high school to working in accounting at a glass company and then a medical clinic.  I learned so much from them.  I’m currently at Lake Washington Institute of Technology where I’ve worked for 22.5 years.  I started as an Accounting Technician and have worked my way up to Director, Payroll & Benefits.  I’ve watched our college grow from one building to four.  What an amazing transformation.  I work with a wonderful team and plan to retire from the college.  We’ll see what life brings.

In my “spare” time, I enjoy reading murder mysteries, wine and spending time at home by the fire with my family.  My two cocker spaniels seem to like the latter part best.
